  • Present Scholarly Information on the local, state, national, and international level.
I have presented on all levels from local, here at Methodist College, to internationally attended conferences, at the PCA/ACA Conference. Please see my list of presentations.

  • Begin to identify research projects and participate in these alone or with other college professionals.
I have done a great deal of research over the last few years. I have worked on a project with Dr. Strasma on the development of Writing Programs. I have worked with Lori Wagner on the benefits of interdisciplinary instructional design. I have conducted my own research in the fields of literary and cultural studies focusing on the use of monsters to unother othered populations. Please see my list of presentations.
I spent three weeks over the summer researching, in the original 1818 journals, gender bias is the reception of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein at the British Library. I am still working on this research project.
I have been collecting survey data on the effectiveness and student perceptions of the Writing Across the Curriculum projects in our N211 and N450 courses.

  • Seek opportunities to include students in research activities.
Research Projects. Every semester I assign a research project to the students in my ENG201 and ENG250 courses. The students must identify a health related problem in their community. Then they must conduct both primary research (interviews, surveys, and other data collection) and secondary research (scholarly journal articles, etc.). The students must then come up with a solution to their community’s problem using the research they collected. I also encourage the students to follow through with their solutions in their communities.
SGA. As the Faculty Advisor for the Student Government Association, I encourage and help facilitate the officers and committee chairs of SGA to collect survey data from students regarding programming and other student needs and interests.
WAC. After J. West and I piloted the first WAC assignment, in N211 during the Summer 2015 term, we assessed the assignment in two ways.  We compared the quality of the writing from the same course the previous summer term to the quality of the writing from the WAC assignment in Summer 2015.  We also administered a survey to the students regarding the WAC assignment.  I am happy to report that the quality of writing improved and students had positive responses to the WAC assignment.  Additionally, at the end of each semester, with the help of the instructors who teach the Writing Across the Curriculum projects, I survey the students who participated in the WAC program. The surveys are designed to collect data regarding the steps of the project and of the drafting process they found most effective in the development of their writing. Additionally, data is collected regarding the transfer of skills from the N211 WAC project to the N450 WAC project.
Literary & Cultural Studies. I also try to engage students in my literary and cultural studies research. Not only do I share with my students what I am currently studying, but I also incorporate aspects of my research into my students' learning materials and assignments. Additionally, at Scholarship and Research Day in spring of 2017, I had a table with my presentation material and conference paper for “Frankenstein’s American Horror Success Story: Monsters as Agents of Social Change.” I even converted by PowerPoint into a video, so I could play it on a continuous loop for students to watch.

  • Mentor less experienced faculty on both an informal and formal basis.
I have formally mentored Brooke Rumbold and Jennifer O’Neil, our English adjunct faculty. I have informally mentored faculty on creating effective writing assignments, using technology, and teaching online. Additionally, I have formally mentored faculty on creating effective writing assignments and rubrics, using technology, and teaching online through various presentations and workshops given at Methodist College. Please see my list of presentations.
